STEP IT UP
There are many easy ways to increase your daily steps. Use your imagination and come up with your own list:
- Take a walk with your spouse, child, or friend
- Walk the dog
- Use the stairs instead of the elevator
- Park your car in a space farthest from your destination
- Better yet, walk to your destination
- Get up to change the channel
- Window shop
- Plan a walking meeting
- Walk over to visit a neighbor
- Get outside to walk around the garden or do a little weeding
- Get up from your desk and take a three-minute walk every hour
- Go for a walk during your lunch break
- Don’t call your office colleagues; walk over to their offices whenever possible
- Hold walking meetings - walk and talk
- Walk your children to school
- Walk every supermarket aisle, whether you need to or not
- Use a cordless phone and walk while you talk
- Exercise or stretch while watching TV. Use the commercials as a cue to move
- Walk the perimeter of the field during sporting events or practice
- Play music and dance around the house
- Walk into the bank or restaurant instead of using the drive-in window
- Take a walk while waiting for your doctor's appointment or for a restaurant table
Continue to track your daily steps and/or mileage; and keep notes on how you feel, how your body is improving, or other changes you are making to improve your health.
If you are in very poor physical condition or at any point you feel that you are progressing too rapidly slow down a bit and try smaller increases. If you have any health concerns seek your physician's advice prior to starting or changing your exercise routine.
